Question: What are the top three annoyances or negative images, fears, doubts that come to people’s minds when they think about a holiday trip to India?

A common annoyance for people thinking about a holiday in India is the dirtiness. This is understandable, as India is sometimes associated with busy streets full of dirt and rubbish. It is important to recognise that there are indeed differences in how clean different parts of India are. In remote areas, it can be difficult to clean up the dirt due to limited resources and infrastructure. This means that waste management in these regions is often a challenge. What always strikes me is that the cleaning in and around homes in India is often well taken care of. Many people place a high value on the cleanliness of their own living environment. This sometimes contrasts with public spaces, where the challenges in waste management can be more visible. And it is not the case that the dirt leaves India and many Indians unscathed, I often talk to locals about this and they tell me that they too are annoyed by all the dirt and are trying to do their part to make the city cleaner. However, in larger cities and tourist areas, you can see improvements, especially since my first visit in 2019. The Indian government and various non-profit organizations have put a lot of effort into waste management and urban improvement, resulting in cleaner streets and better waste collection in urban areas. I always try to keep an open mind and approach the diversity and culture of India with an understanding view, always trying to lead by example.
Another common annoyance when planning a trip to India is the perception of unreliability and the direct, sometimes pushy way people can behave. This can be a source of stress and discomfort for some travelers, so it is good to understand more about it.
Travelers may feel that agreements or promises are not always kept. This may be due to cultural differences in how time and agreements are approached. In some cases, there may be a difference in expectations between what you as a traveler consider ‘reliable’ and what local practices are. It is useful to make clear agreements and put them in writing where possible.
In India, the way people communicate can be direct and open. This can sometimes come across as pushy or ‘in your face’, especially if you are not used to this type of interaction. In many cases, this directness stems from cultural norms that value openness and personal involvement. It can be reassuring to know that this approach often comes from a genuine intention of hospitality. In Indian culture, a guest is often treated as a god or king, a sign of deep-rooted hospitality and respect. People often want to help and show their interest, which can be interpreted as pushy by those unfamiliar with local etiquette.
I always try to take these cultural differences into account as much as possible and I am flexible. I regularly take the time to have a chat, which often leads to very nice conversations. I personally really enjoy the openness and hospitality of the Indians. These interactions often give a deeper insight into the culture and provide pleasant and surprising experiences.
It is absolutely okay to set boundaries when you feel uncomfortable. If something is inconvenient, I always say a polite but firm “no” and move on. On the rare occasion that this is not responded to, I use my tone of voice and facial expression to make it clear that I do not want it. This usually causes the person to back off. This helps me maintain my boundaries in a polite and respectful manner, while keeping the interaction pleasant and friendly.
Poverty in India is often confronting, with a huge gap between rich and poor clearly visible. This often affects me deeply and can be difficult to deal with. It is important to understand that poverty is not just an economic issue, but also a complex social problem that can affect multiple generations. Lack of basic amenities such as clean water and sanitation, and limited access to education and healthcare are just some of the challenges that many people in India face.
When it comes to street children and beggars, it is important to know that many of these children are often used by gangs to raise money. These gangs exploit vulnerable children and use them to generate income, often without the children themselves experiencing any benefit. To avoid unintentionally contributing to this exploitation, I generally do not give money to begging children. Instead, I choose to donate to local initiatives and charities that work directly to improve the living conditions of these children and their families. By supporting through trusted organisations that provide education, healthcare and other essential assistance, I contribute to sustainable change and help in a way that really makes an impact.
An alternative way to help, which I often use, is to walk with the children to a food stall and buy them something to eat and have a chat with them. This way I know for sure that the food supply goes directly to them and is not withheld by a third party. Often these children are very proud, especially because they are often turned away by vendors and are now allowed to stand up and buy something. It not only provides immediate help, but also a moment of recognition and dignity for them.
Despite the challenges this situation presents, it is also inspiring to see how people are showing resilience and trying to make the best of their situation. The resilience and perseverance of many Indian people in the face of difficult circumstances can be a powerful reminder of the power of the human spirit. Although it can be difficult to deal with this situation, I always try to act with respect and humanity. I believe that even small contributions through the right channels can make a big difference.
My experience is that India, while it has its challenges, is not necessarily more dangerous than certain cities in Europe. In fact, I have often felt more unsafe on the Rotterdam metro at 8pm than I have during my travels in India. Safety for me is always a matter of common sense and caution.
For example, I avoid walking through dark, secluded streets after dark. Instead, I usually opt for a tuk-tuk or taxi to get from point A to point B. When I travel by train, I opt for the more expensive classes, such as 2 AC (two-class air-conditioned), where I have a reserved seat or bed. These classes not only offer more comfort, but also extra safety and often a cozy atmosphere because you travel with a small number of fellow passengers.
By taking these precautions, I generally feel safe and protected while traveling in India. It is important to be aware of your surroundings and act sensibly, but this applies to any destination, whether it is India or Europe.
Q: And what are the top three positive images?

What always strikes me about India is its breathtaking beauty. The diversity is truly unparalleled, from majestic mountains and vast deserts to lush forests and stunning coastlines. The architecture is particularly impressive, with iconic palaces, forts, temples and mosques each telling their own story. In every region I experience something unique, from the bustling markets and colourful festivals to the serene nature reserves and quaint villages. This diversity in landscape and culture is what makes India such a visually and emotionally rich experience. I see the beauty of India in every corner of the country, whether I’m walking through a bustling city or seeking out the tranquility of the countryside. It’s always a journey of discovery filled with awe-inspiring sights and moments of wonder.
What really touches me in India is the incredible friendliness and hospitality of the people. The genuine warmth with which you are welcomed as a guest is something you don’t often encounter. In India, hospitality is treated with great reverence and respect. During my travels, I have often experienced how open and friendly the people are, which leads to valuable conversations and insights. It is special to see how their openness and friendliness enables a deeper connection with their culture and daily life.
What also touched me deeply was that even the poorest, despite their limited resources, offered their last tea or food. This unconditional hospitality left a powerful impression and reminded me how important it is to treat the hospitality you receive with gratitude and respect. These experiences changed my perspective on life and made me realize how good I have always had it. They inspired me to set up Heart of India Travel, with the aim of contributing to the local economy of the underprivileged, no matter how small that contribution may be. The depth of the personal stories and the sincere way in which people approach their lives remain a constant source of inspiration for me.
In India you experience a wealth that goes far beyond material possessions. It is a country of enormous diversity, where the true value of life often does not lie in material things, but in the way people surround themselves with love and care. This experience becomes particularly clear to me when I visit villages and small communities.
It is heartwarming to see how people, despite their limited resources, surround themselves with love and support each other. Their happiness does not come from the amount of possessions they have, but from the genuine connection and strong community ties they cherish. During my travels, I am often invited into the most humble homes, where the hospitality and warmth are unparalleled. These people share what they have with pride, and even the smallest gestures of kindness and generosity are imbued with genuine care and attention.
What touches me deeply is the way these people find their happiness in the simplicity and love they share with each other. This is in stark contrast to the materialistic consumerism and endless search for more that occupies many of us in the West.
These encounters have made me realise that true wealth lies in the quality of relationships you have and the love you spread. It is a valuable lesson that has changed my perspective on life and taught me to appreciate more what is truly important.
For those who have never visited the heart of India, the image can often be influenced by media and superficial information. These reports often focus on the poverty and chaos in the big cities, which can make India seem negative and overwhelming. They give a one-sided view by ignoring the rich culture, resilience of the people and the beauty of the country. The real India, with its hospitality, age-old traditions and beautiful nature, only becomes visible when you explore the heart of the country itself.
When you really visit the heart of India and get more deeply involved in the local culture, you begin to appreciate the nuance and beauty of the country in a whole new way. My own experiences have shown me that while the challenges and problems are clearly visible, there is a much richer and more complex story to be discovered. The heart of India reveals a stunning beauty, warm hospitality and a deeper way of life that is often not visible in superficial images. What I initially considered problematic often turned out to be an integral and valuable part of the Indian way of life. These insights only really came to the fore when I immersed myself further in the culture and began to understand the complexity of the country.
When I say “the heart of India,” I am referring to the authentic and rich experiences that can be had by going beyond the usual tourist trails and big cities. It includes the cultural depth, the genuine hospitality, the unspoilt beauty of nature, and the social realities of the country. In these regions, you will experience the real Indian culture. Indigenous villages where time seems to have stood still and where you often feel like you have gone back 30 years in time. Here you will see age-old traditions in practice, such as opium ceremonies that still take place according to ancient rituals. You will be surrounded by handmade crafts, local music performed in traditional ways, and authentically prepared food that is prepared with love and care. These experiences show me a fuller and more nuanced picture of what India really has to offer. The richness that you will find here is not in material things, but in the love, community, and age-old culture that the people share with you.
Yes, in 2019, during a 2,5 month solo trip through India, my passion for this country was awakened. India was not on my bucket list, but it became the destination that stole my heart. Despite my initial prejudices about hygiene and safety, I discovered the authentic beauty, the warm people and the delicious food of India.
Back in the Netherlands, my desire to do more for the people there grew. My search for volunteer work led me to Marian Dekkers founder of The Key of Education and in 2022 I left for India again. Although Covid brought challenges, I resumed my journey of discovery as soon as the borders opened, from Gujarat to Rajasthan and Punjab.
These experiences inspired me to start a travel company focused on sharing India’s rich culture and hospitality with others, while also contributing to the local communities.
In 2023, I made a radical decision: sell my apartment, quit my job, and embark on a new adventure. As an independent traveler and founder of Heart of India Travel, I am ready for an exciting new chapter.
Since then, I have been exploring Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and some special places in other states, driven by the urge to explore without fixed plans. This freedom allows me to make deeper connections and discover hidden treasures. During my annual wintering in India, I have worked with hotel owners to find ways in which my clients’ visits can contribute to employment in the surrounding villages. We have designed tours that not only provide a glimpse into local culture and traditions, but also allow for direct interaction with villagers. Clients can participate in lessons in traditional crafts such as chapati making and pottery, attend musical performances and cook with locals. These experiences provide an authentic introduction to the culture while also contributing to the local communities.
Heart of India Travel is my way of sharing my passion for India and taking the traveler who books with us on an adventure that reveals the rich and authentic Heart of India, where every experience tells a vivid and surprising story.
